We sell guest post placements, so we have every incentive to tell you DR is the number that matters and to leave it there. It isn't, and we won't. DR (or DA, or any single authority score) tells you how much link equity a domain has accumulated. It tells you almost nothing about whether a placement on that domain will actually help you.
What we check before greenlighting any placement
Real organic traffic, not just backlinks. A site can have a high DR purely from an old backlink profile while getting almost no current search traffic. That's a domain that used to matter, not one that matters now. We pull actual estimated organic traffic — if it's near zero, the DR number is close to meaningless regardless of how impressive it looks.
Topical relevance, checked by hand. A DR 60 site in an unrelated niche is worth less to you than a DR 25 site squarely in your industry. Google's ability to evaluate topical relevance has gotten a lot better over the years, and generic high-authority placements on off-topic sites increasingly read as exactly what they are.
Whether the site accepts literally anyone. Sites that will publish any paid content, on any topic, with minimal editorial review, tend to get devalued over time — sometimes gradually, sometimes in a single algorithm update that specifically targets link networks. If a site's "write for us" page reads like an open door with no gatekeeping, that's a signal, not a feature.
How the outbound links are structured. Sites that publish 40 outbound links per article, all clearly paid placements packed into a single generic "resources" paragraph, are a different risk profile than sites that publish one or two contextual links inside genuinely useful content. The second kind holds value longer.
Whether a human could plausibly have found this page useful. This is the test that's hardest to fake and easiest to skip. Read the actual article the placement would sit inside. If you can't imagine a real person landing on it from search and getting something out of it, the placement's value is fragile no matter what the metrics say.
The uncomfortable truth about volume-based guest post buying
A lot of guest post marketplaces are optimized to sell you volume: 10 placements, 50 placements, filtered by DR range, checkout in one click. That model works fine if your goal is hitting a number. It works less well if your goal is links that hold up over a multi-year time horizon, because volume-based buying tends to select for sites that are easy to get placements on — which correlates, imperfectly but meaningfully, with sites that are easier for search engines to eventually discount.
We built our own guest post packages around a smaller number of more carefully vetted sites rather than the largest inventory we could assemble, for exactly this reason. It's a slower way to sell, and it's the one we'd want if we were the ones buying.
